RDI and Structural Development

The Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (Arene) is preparing a structural analysis of the RDI activities and strengths of the Finnish universities of applied sciences (UAS). This analysis constitutes a follow-up to a previous report on the general structural development with the UAS sector, published in 2015. The Work started in september 2016. The final report will be published in March 2017. 

The goal of this analysis is to highlight the vital importance of the universities of applied sciences’ RDI activities in fulfilling their role regionally, nationally, and internationally. To achieve this goal, the report will present an overview of the RDI activities at UASs, displaying their strengths, working methods, and societal and scientific impact. Additionally, the report will contain policy recommendations for future strategic actions to be taken in developing these activities.

The conclusion of analysis is that RDI activities of UAS are vital part of Finnish research and innovation system. It has strenghts in practical aspects and high knowledge. There are effective structures and innovation ecosystems in RDI, which are needed to utilise better in Finnish system.

RDI in UAS

  • Research and development was assigned as the statutory duty of Universities of Applied Sciences in Finland in 2003. Innovation was
  • added to the statutory duties in 2015.
  • The volume of financing of RDI activities for all Universities of Applied Sciences amounted to €109 million in 2015. In 2017, €86 million
  • of the Ministry of Education’s budget financing has been allocated to the financing model of the Universities of Applied Sciences.
  • 7,691 publications per year.
  • The RDI activities produced 624 new products or services, 488 new operating concepts and 233 new tools.
  • Approximately 7,210 companies, 5,300 of which were SMEs, participated in RDI.
  • 259 significant RDI environments and infrastructures that support RDI have been catalogued at Universities of Applied Sciences.
  • The total number of RDI personnel is 3,988. 679 of whom are post-doctorate students.
