Arene

The Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences (Arene) serves to influence and promote higher education policy in Finland and Europe. It promotes co-operation between universities of applied sciences and exerts influence on the international stage. Arene provides universities of applied sciences with the prerequisites for high-quality, workplace-oriented higher education as well as research, development and innovation. 

 

The priorities for Arene in year 2017 are:

 

  • To raise the profiles of universities of applied sciences in terms of their operation and strengths; Arene invests is public affairs. The results and main themes of the structural development reports are made use of in communication. The aim is to clarify Arene’s main message about the universities of applied sciences and to strengthen people’s awareness of their operation.

  • To support the role of universities of applied sciences as reformers of working life and businesses; Arene will implement an impact report on the business cooperation between the universities of applied sciences and small and medium-sized enterprises. This report will be carried out with the Federation of Finnish Enterprises and UNIFI. Arene will implement a structural development report on the RDI activities and effectiveness of the universities of applied sciences.

  • To promote the operational preconditions of universities of applied sciences; Arene contributes to the development of the Finnish higher education system, the strengthening of the financial status of universities of applied sciences and the diversification of the funding possibilities in RDI. Arene is an active participant in the evaluation and development of the university of applied sciences reform (UAS Act and funding model).

  • To strengthen the cooperation, specialisation and internationality of universities of applied sciences as part of the European Higher Education Area; Arene supports, coordinates and promotes the operative cooperation of universities of applied sciences in Arene’s projects and in the expert forums of universities of applied sciences. Arene is an active influencer in national and international higher education networks (e.g. UASnet and UAS4Europe).

    • Structural development of student selection; Arene coordinates the Structural development of student selection 2017–2020 in cooperation with the universities of applied sciences. The aim is to streamline student selections and make them more flexible, clear and efficient, strengthen the use of selection based on school performance and develop new selection methods based on digitality.

    • To strengthen digital learning and education in universities of applied sciences; Arene supports cooperation with universities of applied sciences in the development of flexible digital study paths and in the development of the operating culture and operating preconditions of digital higher education.

 

Arene members are the rectors of universities of applied sciences (actual members) and representatives of university owners (supportive members).

Conference matters are overseen by the Board, which is comprised of the President and five other members, who are elected at the annual meeting. The President and other Board members serve a term of two years.

Arene's actual members convene at joint meetings held a few times each year. Arene Board meetings are generally held once a month.
